Unconditioned means that there already was a connection before.
Conditioned means the opposite, we try to relate / connect / bind something new to the old connection, and we want the new thing to elicit some behavior.

The more you repeat, the more someone reacts (acquisition)
When you repeat it more times without actually giving a reward, the reaction decreases (extinction)
