I will first present a definition of what populism is and how we understand democracy in this essay. I will continue with a brief overview of arguments made by other scholars on the topic, whether or not populism is bad for contemporary democracy. Following with a concise comparison between the Netherlands and Poland. The Dutch because of their populist party, Party of Freedom (PVV) under Geert Wilders, which always seem to be one of the biggest parties in the government but to date has never won an election (Mudde, 2017), while in Poland an authoritarian right-wing populist party, Law and Justice party (PiS) under Jaroslaw Kaczynski, has emerged and taken power. Through this comparison I will argue that populism is bad for democracy and dangerous when there are no credible liberal political platforms left for people to put their faith in (Bugaric, Kuhelj, 2018, p.32).
