Permissive Britain and Sex Education
Dr. Martin Cole born in 1931 released a sex education movie in 1971 called ‘Growing Up’. The movie was intended for the youth and the aim was to show it in schools, however the movie shocked the public with images of a masturbating man and woman and people having sex in front of the camera. Dr. Cole, who contributed to the many debates around sex, abortion and anti conception hoping to get the permissive British society a little bit further instead, started a public debate on sex education by publishing his movie. The BBC documented a small part of this debate in one of the episodes recorded. In a contemporary document from 1971, dr Cole and many others comment on the movie and on the ideas on sex education. This essay analyses this recorded conversation by the BBC and places it in context with secondary sources, who comment on the permissive British society in the 60s and it’s ideas on sex education. The question ‘what controversies around the topic of sex education were expressed in 1960s Britain?’ will be answered throughout this essay.
