Bachelor Thesis: Dutch Cannabis Policy Change Analysed through Newspaper Articles

Abstract
Policies around the legalization and regulation of cannabis, medical and recreational, is a topic of increasing debate. I will conduct a content analysis with a focus on discourse in Dutch newspaper articles about a cannabis policy change. Analysing how Dutch media represent this change will contribute new insights about social actors in the policy making and maintaining process. This is necessary for successful interventions and policy changes in the future. I will be answering the question; Why did the proposed changes to the cannabis policy in 2011/12 fail? Results show that representation of stereotypes, ignorance of authority of stakeholders, closed authority circuits around politicians, neglecting of health arguments and legislative importance in policies all contributed to the failure of the proposed changes.
